Dryer Error Codes: What They Mean and What to Do

The short answer
Dryer error codes point to the part of the dryer that has a problem. LG d80, d90 and d95 mean the vent is 80 to 95% restricted, Samsung HE is a heating error, Samsung 9C1 is a power problem, and Whirlpool’s Check Vent light and AF code mean poor airflow. Many codes clear once the vent is cleaned.

Most codes point to airflow first
A surprising number of dryer codes come back to the vent. LG d80 to d95, Whirlpool and Maytag Check Vent and AF, and many Samsung heating codes are the dryer telling you the air can’t get out. A new part won’t help until the vent is clear.
- Clean the lint screen and wash off dryer sheet film.
- Pull the dryer out and straighten or replace a crushed duct.
- Check the outside hood opens fully and isn’t blocked by snow.
- Run a normal cycle and see if the code comes back.
How to reset a dryer error code
On most dryers you can clear the display by switching the breaker off, or unplugging the dryer, for about 5 minutes and then restoring power. That only clears the display. If the fault is real, the code returns on the next cycle, and the dryer needs a repair or a vent cleaning.
Is it safe to keep using a dryer that shows an airflow code?
For a load or two, yes, but not for long. The dryer is running hotter than it should and wearing out its safety parts, and lint near heat is the leading cause of dryer fires. Clean the vent soon.

Why does my dryer show a code but still run?
Some codes are warnings, not stops. LG d80 and Whirlpool’s Check Vent light let the dryer keep running, but it runs hotter and slower until the vent is cleared.
Do I need a new control board when my dryer shows a code?
Rarely. Most codes point to a sensor, a heating part, a switch or the vent. We test those before recommending a board.
Where do I find my dryer’s model number?
On a tag inside the door opening on most dryers, sometimes on the back panel. It helps us confirm what a code means on your model.
