Samsung Dryer HE and HC Codes: What They Mean
On a Samsung dryer, HE (or hE) is a heating error, and HC (or hC) is an overheating or heating-circuit fault on many models. Both usually start with a restricted vent, then a blown fuse or thermostat, a failed element, or a gas igniter problem.

The code shows up differently by model, sometimes as HE and sometimes as hE, and a few models use related codes. We confirm what it means on your model before testing parts.
What to check first
- Clean the lint screen and wash it with warm soapy water.
- Check the duct behind the dryer for kinks, especially on pedestal models.
- Feel the airflow at the outside hood. Weak air means the vent needs cleaning.
- On gas models, make sure the gas valve behind the dryer is fully open.
- On electric models, switch the double breaker fully off and back on. Half the supply missing gives a heating error.
- Reset the dryer: switch off the breaker or unplug it for 5 minutes, then try a normal cycle.
What causes a Samsung heating code
A restricted vent
The most common cause of both codes. Poor airflow makes the dryer overheat, trips the high-limit thermostat or blows the thermal fuse, and the dryer reports a heating fault.

A blown thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat
Both cut the heat to protect the dryer. Once they open, the dryer can’t heat and shows HE.

A failed heating element (electric)
A broken coil means no heat at all and an HE code.

An igniter or valve coil fault (gas)
On gas models, a weak igniter or worn valve coils stop the burner lighting.

A thermistor fault
The temperature sensor tells the board how hot the dryer is. A bad reading can trigger heating codes.

Can I reset a Samsung HE code?
Switch the breaker off or unplug the dryer for 5 minutes. That clears the display. If the cause is still there, the code comes back on the next cycle.
Why does my Samsung show HE after a vent cleaning?
The overheating probably already blew the thermal fuse or tripped a thermostat. Clean airflow prevents the next failure, but the failed part still needs replacing.
Is HE the same on gas and electric Samsung dryers?
