Dryer Not Spinning in Cedar Rapids

If your dryer runs but the drum won’t turn, the drive belt has usually snapped. Worn rollers, a bad idler pulley, a seized bearing or the motor cause the rest. We carry belts and roller kits on the van and fix most of them the same day.

The short answer

When a dryer runs but the drum doesn’t spin, the drive belt has usually broken or slipped off. If the belt is fine, look at the idler pulley, the drum rollers, the rear bearing or the motor. In Cedar Rapids the repair typically costs $85 to $280, and a belt takes 45 to 60 minutes.

The 30-second hand test

This one check separates a broken belt from a seized part, and it costs nothing. Unplug the dryer first, open the door and turn the drum by hand.

What you feelWhat it points to
The drum spins freely, like a bicycle wheelThe belt has snapped or slipped off the motor pulley
The drum turns, but it feels rough or thumpsWorn drum rollers or glides
The drum barely moves or grindsA seized rear bearing or roller. Don’t force it
The drum feels normalThe belt is fine. The motor, idler pulley or a switch is the fault

If the drum won’t move or grinds, stop there. Forcing a seized drum can tear the belt or damage the rear panel and turn a moderate repair into a bigger one.

Why the drum stops turning

Five parts drive or carry the drum. When any of them fails, the drum stops or slows. These are the causes in the order we find them most.

A snapped or slipped drive belt

The belt wraps all the way around the drum and loops over the motor pulley. When it breaks, the motor and blower keep running, so the dryer sounds normal from the next room while nothing turns. Belts harden from years of heat and then crack, often on a dryer that worked fine the day before.

What we test: the belt, and the belt switch on models that have one. Our broken belt guide covers the signs.

A worn idler pulley

The idler is a spring-loaded wheel that keeps the belt tight. When its bearing wears, the belt slips, the drum turns slowly or stops under a full load, and you usually hear a squeal first.

What we test: the pulley’s spin and the spring tension.

Flat or seized drum rollers

Two or four rollers carry the weight of the drum. As they wear they thump, then drag, and a seized roller can stop the drum outright. We replace them as a set.

What we test: each roller for flat spots and free spin.

A seized rear drum bearing or worn glides

The bearing at the back of the drum, or the felt glides at the front, can wear until the drum won’t turn. This one almost never fails quietly. Grinding and a hot smell usually come first.

What we test: the drum’s movement once the belt is off.

A motor that hums but won’t turn

If the motor hums and the drum stays still with a good belt, the motor’s start winding may have failed or the motor has seized. It is the least common cause and the most expensive.

What we test: the motor windings and whether it turns freely once the belt is off.

Not spinning or not starting?

They sound alike but point to different parts. A dryer that won’t spin still powers up: the panel lights and you can hear the motor. A dryer that won’t start does nothing when you press the button, which usually means a door switch, a thermal fuse or the breaker. Our dryer won’t start page covers that path.

There is one overlap. Many Whirlpool-built dryers, which includes a lot of the Maytag, Kenmore and Amana machines in Cedar Rapids homes, have a switch that cuts all power when the belt snaps. The dryer looks completely dead, but the fault is a belt.

Is it safe to run a dryer that isn’t spinning?

No. If the drum isn’t turning, the heater can still run against clothes sitting in one spot, which can scorch them and is a fire risk. Unplug an electric dryer, or turn off the gas valve on a gas dryer, until it is repaired.

The dryers we see most around town

  • Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and Amana: most share the same belt, idler and roller design, and many have a belt switch. We carry these parts on the van.
  • Samsung and LG: common in newer homes in Marion, Hiawatha and the north side. Roller and bearing wear shows up after several years of heavy use.
  • GE and Frigidaire: use front glides that wear and drag. The drum turns slowly and scrapes before it stops.

Gas and electric dryers use the same drum, belt and rollers, so a not-spinning fault is fixed the same way on both. Brand details are on our Whirlpool, Maytag and Samsung pages.

What it costs to fix a dryer that won’t spin

Most not-spinning repairs in Cedar Rapids cost $85 to $280 for parts and labor. A belt is the most common fix and sits near the low end. You get the exact price after the diagnosis and before any work starts.

RepairTypical priceTime on site
Drive belt$100 to $17045 to 60 min
Idler pulley$85 to $14045 to 60 min
Drum rollers (set)$110 to $19060 to 90 min
Rear drum bearing or glides$130 to $21060 to 90 min
Drive motor$150 to $28060 to 90 min

When the belt goes on an older dryer, we check the rollers and idler at the same time. Doing them together costs less than a second visit. The full cost guide lists every part.

Should I replace the rollers when the belt breaks?

Only if they are worn. We spin each roller by hand while the drum is out. If they are flat or rough, doing them on the same visit saves you a second trip and a second labor charge. If they are fine, we leave them.

How the repair visit works

  1. Tell us what you hear. A snap, a hum or grinding tells us which parts to bring.
  2. We confirm from the front first. We check the belt and belt switch before taking the drum out, so you don’t pay for teardown on a simple fault.
  3. You approve the price. We show you the worn parts and give you the full price.
  4. We test it loaded. We run a full cycle with the drum turning smoothly before we leave.

Dryer not spinning: more questions

Questions we hear on drum and belt calls around Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha.

Why does my dryer make noise but the drum won’t spin?

A running motor with a still drum almost always means the belt has snapped or come off the pulley. The motor and blower keep going, so it sounds normal. If you hear a hum with no movement at all, the motor or a seized bearing is more likely.

How long does a drive belt replacement take?

About 45 to 60 minutes on most dryers. We carry belts for Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, Samsung, GE and LG, so it is usually done on the first visit.

Why did my dryer belt break?

Mostly age and heat. The rubber hardens over years of heat cycles and cracks. A blocked vent speeds that up because trapped heat cooks the belt on every load, and so do overloaded drums.

My drum turns slowly and then stops with a full load. Is that the belt?

Often it is the idler pulley letting the belt slip, or worn rollers adding drag. The drum turns when it’s empty and stalls under weight. Both are quick repairs once we confirm which one.

Is it worth fixing the drum on an older dryer?

A belt alone almost always is. If the belt, rollers and bearing are all worn on a dryer past about 12 years, the total gets closer to a new machine. Our repair or replace guide walks through the math.
