Who really built your Kenmore?

Kenmore was the Sears house brand. Sears didn’t make dryers. Other companies built them and put the Kenmore name on the front, mostly Whirlpool, and in later years also LG and Frigidaire. The right parts and repair steps depend on who built yours, and you can’t tell from the outside.

The first three digits of the model number tell you. The tag is usually inside the door opening or on the back panel, and the model number looks like 110.12345678.

Common Kenmore problems

Whirlpool-built (110): fuse, belt and rollers

The classic Kenmore 70, 80 and 90 series dryers are Whirlpool-built and fail the same way: a thermal fuse blown by a restricted vent, a snapped belt, worn rollers or a dry idler. Many are still running in older Cedar Rapids homes past 15 years.

What we test: the fuse, belt, idler and rollers. See our Whirlpool page.

LG-built (796): sensors and codes

LG-built Kenmores show error codes on the display. Thermistor faults, power faults and airflow warnings are the common ones, alongside the usual heating parts.

What we test: the code, then the thermistor, element and power supply. See our GE and LG page.

Frigidaire-built (417): glides and bearings

Frigidaire-built dryers support the front of the drum on plastic or felt glides. When they wear through, the drum scrapes, squeals and leaves marks on clothes.

What we test: the front glides, the drum seal and the rear bearing.

Any Kenmore: no heat

Whoever built it, a no-heat Kenmore usually has a blown thermal fuse, a failed element (electric) or a weak igniter or valve coils (gas).

What we test: the heating circuit part by part. See dryer not heating.

Older Kenmores are often worth fixing. Most failures are a single cheap part.

Why old Kenmores keep running

The Whirlpool-built Kenmore 70, 80 and 90 series dryers are simple machines with sturdy motors and parts that are still easy to get. We regularly work on ones that are 15 or 20 years old, especially in older homes on the southeast side and in Czech Village. When one acts up, it is usually a fuse, a belt or rollers, not the end of the dryer.

Can you still get parts for an old Kenmore dryer?

For Whirlpool-built Kenmores (model starting 110), yes. The fuses, thermostats, elements, belts, idlers and rollers are still made and inexpensive. Some old timers and control boards are harder to find, and we’ll tell you before we start if a part is a problem.

How a Kenmore repair visit works

  1. Send us the model number. The first three digits tell us who built it, so we bring the right parts.
  2. We test before we replace. A code or a symptom points to an area. The meter confirms the part.
  3. You approve the price. We show you the failed part and give you the full price.
  4. We run a full cycle. Heat, spin and airflow checked before we leave.

Who makes Kenmore dryers?

Kenmore never made its own dryers. Most were built by Whirlpool (model numbers starting 110), and others by LG (796) or Frigidaire (417), depending on the year.

Where is the model number on a Kenmore dryer?

Usually on a tag inside the door opening, on the frame or the top edge. On some older models it is on the back. It looks like 110.12345678, with a dot after the first three digits.

My old Kenmore squeaks and thumps. Is it worth fixing?

Usually. On a Whirlpool-built Kenmore that is the rollers and idler, which cost a fraction of a new dryer. We replace them as a set and check the belt while the drum is out.

Is Sears still servicing Kenmore dryers?

Sears Home Services still operates, but you don’t need them. Any dryer technician who knows the original maker can fix a Kenmore, and the parts are the same.

My Kenmore shows a code on the display. What does it mean?

Codes are used mostly on LG-built Kenmores. Common ones are tE1 or tE2 (a temperature sensor), nP (a power supply problem on electric models) and d80 to d95 (a restricted vent). Our LG page has a full code table.
