The short answer
An electric dryer that runs but won’t heat usually has a burned-out heating element, a blown thermal fuse, a failed thermostat, or only half of its 240-volt supply. We check the breaker and outlet before any part. In Cedar Rapids electric dryer repair typically costs $75 to $200.

How an electric dryer uses 240 volts
An electric dryer runs on a 240-volt circuit, which is two 120-volt sides working together on a double breaker. One side runs the motor, drum light and controls. The heating element needs both sides at once.
That split explains the most common electric dryer call: the drum turns, the lights work, the timer counts down, and the clothes come out cold. When one side of the supply is lost, the motor still has its 120 volts, but the element never gets the 240 it needs. It looks like a broken element, and replacing the element won’t fix it.
Before you call: switch the dryer’s double breaker fully off, then back on. Half of a double breaker can trip without the handle moving much. If the heat comes back, the breaker was the problem, but if it trips again, call us or an electrician.
Common electric dryer problems
These are the calls we get most on electric dryers, and the parts behind each one. The common parts ride on the van, so most visits end with a working dryer.
| What the dryer does | Usual cause | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|
| Runs, but no heat | Element, thermal fuse, thermostat or half the power missing | Dryer not heating |
| Completely dead | Breaker, cord, door switch or thermal fuse | Dryer won’t start |
| Heats, but takes two cycles | A blocked vent, sometimes a weak element | Dryer vent cleaning |
| Trips the breaker | An element shorted to the housing, or a failing motor | Dryer tripping breaker |
| Squeals, thumps or grinds | Rollers, idler pulley or bearing | Dryer making noise |
Runs but won’t heat: the four causes
A cold electric dryer almost always has one of these four problems. We test them in this order so you pay for the real fault, not a string of guesses.
A burned-out heating element
The element is a long coil of wire in a metal housing. Years of heat fatigue the wire until it breaks, and the dryer runs with no heat at all. Sometimes the broken coil touches the housing and trips the breaker instead.
What we test: resistance across the coil and a check for a short to the housing.
A blown thermal fuse
The fuse cuts the heat when the dryer overheats, usually from a blocked vent. On many electric Whirlpool-built dryers it also cuts the motor, so the dryer goes dead. Replacing it without clearing the vent sets up the next failure.
What we test: continuity across the fuse, then the airflow. See our thermal fuse guide.
A failed cycling or high-limit thermostat
These switch the element on and off. A stuck one leaves the dryer cold, and a drifting one ends the heat too early.
What we test: each thermostat against the maker’s spec.
Half the 240 volts missing
The motor, light and controls run on one 120-volt side of the circuit. The element needs both sides together. When one side drops, from a half-tripped breaker, a burned outlet contact or a loose wire at the terminal block, the dryer runs normally and makes no heat.
What we test: voltage at the outlet and terminal block before we open the dryer. A good element won’t fix a power problem.

Cords, outlets and older wiring
An electric dryer cord has to match the outlet. Older homes have 3-prong dryer outlets, and houses wired or remodeled more recently have 4-prong outlets with a separate ground. The terminal block on the back of the dryer has to be set up to match, including the small ground strap. A dryer moved from one house to another with the wrong setup can run with no heat, trip breakers or become a shock hazard.
About 30% of homes in Cedar Rapids were built before 1960, according to Census data, and many laundry circuits have been changed over the years. Loose or scorched connections at the terminal block are a common find, especially in the older blocks of southeast Cedar Rapids and Czech Village. Never run a dryer on an extension cord.
Is a burning smell from the back of my electric dryer dangerous?
It can be. A loose wire at the terminal block heats up and can scorch the block, the cord or the outlet. Unplug the dryer and don’t use it. We replace the cord or block, and if the outlet is damaged we’ll tell you to call an electrician for that part.
What electric dryer repair costs
Most electric dryer repairs in Cedar Rapids cost $75 to $200 for parts and labor. A thermal fuse or thermostat is at the low end, a heating element at the high end. You get the exact price after the diagnosis and before any work starts.
| Repair | Typical price | Time on site |
|---|---|---|
| Heating element (electric) | $120 to $200 | 45 to 75 min |
| Thermal fuse | $85 to $130 | 30 to 45 min |
| Cycling or high-limit thermostat | $75 to $120 | 30 to 45 min |
| Door switch | $75 to $120 | 30 to 45 min |
| Drive belt | $100 to $170 | 45 to 60 min |
| Drum rollers (set) | $110 to $190 | 60 to 90 min |
| Dryer vent cleaning | $80 to $150 | 30 to 45 min |
The full cost guide lists every part. A good electric dryer lasts about 10 to 13 years, so most single-part repairs are worth doing.
Is it worth repairing an electric dryer?
Usually. An element, a fuse or a thermostat costs a fraction of a new dryer, which runs about $600 to $1,200. If the dryer is past about 12 years and needs a motor or several parts at once, our repair or replace guide helps you decide.
How the repair visit works
- Tell us what it does. No heat, no start, or tripping the breaker.
- We check the power first. Breaker, outlet and terminal block, then the heating circuit part by part.
- You approve the price. We show you the failed part and give you the full price.
- We run a heat test. A full cycle with hot air at the vent before we leave.
Dryer not working?
Tell us whether it runs cold, won’t start or trips the breaker. Calls before noon usually get a same-day visit.
Electric dryer repair: more questions
Questions we hear on electric dryer calls around Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha.
Why does my electric dryer keep tripping the breaker?
The usual causes are a heating element shorted to its housing, a failing motor, or a loose connection at the terminal block. An old or worn breaker can also trip early. Don’t keep resetting it. Unplug the dryer and have it tested.
How much does a heating element replacement cost?
A heating element typically costs $120 to $200 installed in Cedar Rapids, parts and labor. We confirm the element is the fault, not the power supply or a thermostat, before replacing it.
My dryer heats on some settings but not others. Why?
That usually points to a cycling thermostat, or on electronic models the thermistor or a relay on the control board. The element itself is fine if it heats on any setting.
Can I install a new electric dryer on my old 3-prong outlet?
Yes, if the dryer is set up for a 3-wire cord and the ground strap is in place. New dryers usually ship without a cord so it can match your outlet. If you’re not sure which you have, send us a photo of the outlet. See dryer installation.
Do you repair electric dryers the same day?
Most days. Call before noon and we can usually be there that afternoon, with elements, fuses and thermostats on the van.
