First: is it safe?
If you smell gas (rotten eggs), don’t touch the dryer, lights or switches. Leave the house and call Alliant Energy at 1-800-255-4268 from outside.
For any other burning smell that doesn’t fade after the first few minutes, stop the dryer, unplug it (or switch off the breaker), and let it cool. Don’t run another load until you know the cause. Lint near a heat source is the leading cause of home dryer fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

What causes a burning smell
Lint inside the cabinet
Lint escapes past a worn lint trap seal or a loose duct and settles around the heating element or burner. It scorches every time the dryer heats. This is the cause we worry about most.

A blocked vent
When the vent is packed, heat stays inside the dryer and the lint in the drum and duct gets hotter than it should. The smell often comes with loads that take two cycles.

A slipping belt or seized drum part
A worn belt slipping on the motor pulley, a seized idler pulley or a stuck drum roller creates friction heat and a hot rubber smell, often with a squeal.

An electrical fault
A loose wire at the terminal block, a scorched cord or a failing motor gives a hot plastic smell. These can trip the breaker too.

Something in the drum
A crayon, lip balm, a plastic tag or a lighter left in a pocket can melt onto the drum and smell for several loads.

Is some smell normal?
A faint hot-dust smell for the first few minutes, after the dryer has sat unused for a while, is normal. Dust settles on the heating element or burner and burns off. It is common in fall, when dryers that sat in a basement all summer start running daily again.
A brand-new dryer can also smell for its first few loads as coatings on the heater burn off. If the smell lasts longer than that, or it’s getting stronger, have it checked.
My dryer smelled like burning once and then stopped. Should I worry?
If it was brief and hasn’t come back, it may have been dust or something in a pocket. Clean the lint screen, check the drum, and watch the next load. If it comes back, stop using the dryer and have it checked.
