The short answer

The most common Whirlpool dryer repairs are a blown thermal fuse (often from a blocked vent), a heating element, a broken belt or worn idler, and worn drum rollers. The same parts fit many Maytag, Amana and Kenmore dryers. In Cedar Rapids Whirlpool dryer repair typically costs $75 to $200.

One design, several badges

Whirlpool owns Maytag and Amana, and it built most Kenmore dryers sold by Sears. Many of these dryers share the same cabinet, drum, belt, rollers, thermal fuse and thermostats. That is good news for repairs: the parts are cheap, easy to get, and we carry the common ones on the van.

If your dryer says Maytag, Amana or Kenmore (with a model number starting 110), most of this page applies to it too. See our Maytag and Kenmore pages for the differences.

Common Whirlpool problems

These are the faults we find most on these machines, in the order we check them.

Runs but no heat: the thermal fuse

On most Whirlpool-built dryers the thermal fuse sits on the blower housing, reached from the back panel. When the vent is restricted and the dryer overheats, the fuse opens for good. On many electric Whirlpool models the same fuse also cuts the motor, so the dryer goes completely dead instead of just cold.

What we test: the fuse, then the vent that blew it. See thermal fuse blown.

Runs but no heat: the element or thermostats

If the fuse is fine, the heating element (electric) or igniter and valve coils (gas) are next, then the cycling and high-limit thermostats. Whirlpool elements often fail by touching their housing, which can trip the breaker.

What we test: element resistance and a short to the housing, then each thermostat.

Drum won’t turn: belt or idler

Whirlpool machines are belt-driven. The belt wraps the drum and runs over the motor pulley with a spring-loaded idler keeping it tight. A snapped belt leaves the motor humming with a still drum, and on models with a belt switch the whole dryer goes dead.

What we test: the belt, the idler pulley and the belt switch.

Thumping or squealing: rollers and idler

The drum rides on two rear rollers (and front glides on some models). Flat spots make a thump every turn, and a dry idler bearing squeals. We replace rollers as a set.

What we test: each roller’s spin and the idler bearing.

Won’t start: door switch or fuse

A worn door switch plunger or a blown thermal fuse causes most Whirlpool no-start calls. Newer electronic models add a control board, which we test last.

What we test: the door switch, the fuse, then the board’s inputs.

Whirlpool codes and lights

Newer Whirlpool models with electronic controls show a few codes and warning lights. These are the ones people ask us about most.

Code or lightWhat it usually meansWhat to check first
Check Vent lightThe dryer sensed restricted airflow during the cycleLint screen, the duct behind the dryer, and the outside hood
AFAirflow failure: the vent is badly restrictedSame as Check Vent. Don’t keep running it
PFPower failure: power was interrupted during a cyclePress start again. If it repeats, check the outlet and cord
F-codes (F01, F22 and others)A control, sensor or motor fault, depending on the numberNote the exact code and call us

Code meanings vary a little by model and year. We confirm each one against the service data for your model, then test the part before we replace it.

See our Check Vent light guide and the dryer error codes guide.

My Whirlpool’s Check Vent light is on. Is the dryer broken?

No. The light means the dryer is measuring poor airflow. It is warning you before the vent causes overheating. Clean the lint screen, straighten the duct behind the dryer and clear the outside hood. If the light stays on, the vent needs a proper cleaning.

Find your model number first

The model and serial tag on most Whirlpool models is inside the door opening, on the frame or the top edge. On some it is on the back panel. The model starts with letters like WED (electric) or WGD (gas). Reading it to us when you call means we bring the right parts on the first visit.

What Whirlpool dryer repair costs

Most Whirlpool dryer repairs in Cedar Rapids cost $75 to $200 for parts and labor. The parts are widely made and inexpensive, which is one reason these dryers are worth fixing. You get the exact price after the diagnosis and before any work starts.

RepairTypical priceTime on site
Thermal fuse$85 to $13030 to 45 min
Cycling or high-limit thermostat$75 to $12030 to 45 min
Heating element (electric)$120 to $20045 to 75 min
Drive belt$100 to $17045 to 60 min
Idler pulley$85 to $14045 to 60 min
Drum rollers (set)$110 to $19060 to 90 min
Door switch$75 to $12030 to 45 min

A well-kept Whirlpool-built dryer often runs well past 10 years. When one part fails on an older machine, we check the belt, rollers and idler at the same time. Our repair or replace guide covers the cases where a new dryer makes more sense.

How a Whirlpool repair visit works

  1. Send us the model number. It is inside the door frame. It tells us gas or electric and which parts to bring.
  2. We test before we replace. A code or a symptom points to an area. The meter confirms the part.
  3. You approve the price. We show you the failed part and give you the full price.
  4. We run a full cycle. Heat, spin and airflow checked before we leave.

Dryer not working?

Have the model number from inside the door frame ready. Calls before noon usually get a same-day visit.

Whirlpool dryer repair: more questions

Questions Whirlpool owners ask us around Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha.

Where is the thermal fuse on a Whirlpool dryer?

On most Whirlpool-built dryers it is on the blower housing near the bottom, reached by removing the back panel. Unplug the dryer before you open anything. If it has blown, the vent needs checking too, or the new fuse will blow again.

Why is my Whirlpool completely dead after running cool?

On many electric Whirlpool models the thermal fuse powers the motor as well as the heat. A dryer that ran cool or shut off and then went dead has usually blown that fuse from overheating.

Are Whirlpool parts expensive?

No. Fuses, thermostats, belts, idlers and rollers are some of the cheapest dryer parts made, and they are shared with Maytag, Amana and many Kenmore dryers. That keeps most repairs under $200.

Do you repair Whirlpool Cabrio and Duet dryers?

Yes. Cabrio and Duet dryers use the same basic drive and heating parts as other Whirlpool models, with electronic controls. We read their codes on site.

Is my 15-year-old Whirlpool worth fixing?

Often, yes, if the drum turns smoothly and the motor is quiet. A fuse, belt or rollers costs far less than a new dryer. If the motor or control board goes at that age, we’ll tell you honestly whether replacing it makes more sense.
