If you smell gas (a rotten egg smell), don’t turn the dryer or any lights on or off, and don’t use your phone near it. Leave the house and call Alliant Energy’s gas emergency line at 1-800-255-4268 from outside. Call us once the line is safe.
A gas dryer that simply runs cold isn’t a gas leak. It is usually a worn ignition part, and it is safe to turn off and wait for a repair. On every gas call we check the connection behind the dryer for leaks, watch the burner light and burn cleanly, and confirm the exhaust leaves the house before we finish. Gas piping in Iowa falls under the State Plumbing Code (IAC 641-25), so work on the gas line itself, beyond the dryer’s own connector, goes to a licensed plumber.
How a gas dryer makes heat
Knowing the order helps you describe the problem, and it is the order we test in.
- You press start. The motor turns the drum and the blower pulls air through the burner box.
- The igniter glows. A small silicon carbide igniter heats until it glows orange, which takes 30 to 60 seconds.
- The flame sensor switches over. Once the igniter is hot enough, the sensor signals the gas valve to open.
- The valve coils open the gas. Two small coils on the valve open it, the gas meets the glowing igniter and the burner lights.
- The thermostats cycle it. The burner turns off and on through the cycle to hold the temperature.
Watch through the small window on the lower front panel if your dryer has one. Whether the igniter glows, and whether a flame follows, tells us most of what we need before we arrive.
What goes wrong with gas dryers
Gas and electric dryers share the drum, belt, rollers and motor. The parts that fail differently are in the burner. These are the gas-specific faults we find most.
A weak or cracked igniter
This is the most common gas dryer failure. If the igniter never glows, or glows dim and never lights the gas, the drum turns but the air stays cold. Igniters are brittle, so we never touch the glowing tip.

Worn gas valve coils
The coils open the gas valve. When they wear, the igniter glows, then goes out with no flame, and it may try again a few times. The dryer often heats for a while when cold and then stops once the coils warm up. We replace them as a set.

A failed flame sensor
The flame sensor (sometimes called a radiant sensor) tells the valve when to open and confirms the flame. If it sticks, the igniter glows but the gas never opens, or the burner lights and cuts out too soon.
What we test: continuity across the sensor at room temperature and after the burner runs.
A blown thermal fuse from a blocked vent
A gas dryer overheats from a blocked vent just like an electric one, and the thermal fuse cuts the burner. On gas models the vent matters twice as much, because it also carries combustion gases outside.

A thermostat cutting the burner early
A cycling or high-limit thermostat that has drifted turns the burner off too soon, so loads take two cycles.

How do I know if my gas dryer igniter is bad?
Look through the burner window or listen after you press start. If there is no orange glow within a minute, the igniter or a fuse ahead of it has failed. If it glows and then goes dark with no flame, the igniter is fine and the valve coils are the likely fault.
My gas dryer clicks but won’t light. What is that?
The click is the gas valve trying to open. If it clicks with no flame, the coils or the flame sensor are the usual cause. Don’t keep restarting it over and over. Turn it off and have it tested.
Is it safe to use a gas dryer that isn’t heating?

Can you convert my electric dryer to gas, or gas to electric?

Does a gas dryer need its vent cleaned more often?
It needs it just as often, and it matters more. A gas dryer sends combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, out the same vent as the lint. Once a year is the minimum. A carbon monoxide alarm near the laundry area is a good idea in any home with gas appliances.
