Dryer Vent Cleaning in Cedar Rapids

A packed dryer vent makes loads take two cycles, wears out dryer parts and is the leading cause of dryer fires. We brush and vacuum the full run from the dryer to the outside hood and check the airflow before we leave.

The short answer

Dryer vent cleaning clears the lint from the whole duct between your dryer and the outside wall. Most Cedar Rapids homes need it once a year, and every six months with a long run or heavy use. A standard cleaning costs $80 to $150 and takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Why a clean vent matters

Lint builds up a little with every load until it chokes the vent. The dryer then runs longer and hotter, loads take two cycles, and the heat wears out thermal fuses, thermostats and heating elements early. Most of the no-heat and shut-off calls we get start with a blocked vent.

It is also a fire risk. The U.S. Fire Administration lists failure to clean as the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires, and those fires peak in the winter months. On a gas dryer, the vent also carries combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, out of the house.

Clean the lint screen after every load. It is the one thing that makes the biggest difference between vent cleanings. A screen that looks clean can still be coated with dryer sheet film. Wash it with warm soapy water every few months.

Signs your dryer vent needs cleaning

Your dryer usually warns you before the vent is fully blocked. Any one of these is a good reason to book a cleaning.

  • Clothes are still damp after a full cycle, or need a second run
  • The top of the dryer or the laundry room feels hot
  • A musty or burning smell while the dryer runs
  • The outside vent flap barely opens, or you feel weak airflow there
  • Lint collecting around the outside hood or behind the dryer
  • The dryer shuts off partway through, or the thermal fuse has blown
  • It has been more than a year since the vent was cleaned
Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry a load?

Nine times out of ten it is airflow. When the vent is packed, the moist air can’t leave, so the clothes come out warm but damp. A vent cleaning usually fixes it. If drying is still slow with a clean vent and strong airflow at the hood, the heating element or a thermostat is the next suspect. See dryer takes forever to dry.

What a vent cleaning includes

A proper cleaning covers the whole path the air takes, from the lint trap to the outside wall.

  1. We pull the dryer out and disconnect the transition duct behind it. Crushed or kinked foil ducts are replaced on the spot if you want.
  2. We brush the full run with a rotary brush from the dryer end to the outside hood, not just the first few feet.
  3. We vacuum out the lint as it comes loose, and clean the lint trap housing inside the dryer.
  4. We clear the outside hood and check the flap opens fully and closes again.
  5. We measure the airflow at the hood with the dryer running, before and after, so you see the difference.

Long runs and frozen hoods in Cedar Rapids

Two local conditions make vent cleaning more important here than in many places.

Long basement vent runs

About half the homes in the 52403 ZIP code on the southeast side were built before 1960, according to Census data, and many older homes across the city put the laundry in the basement later. The vent then travels across the basement and turns several times to reach an outside wall. The 2024 building code Cedar Rapids uses (IRC M1502) limits a standard dryer vent to 35 feet, minus 5 feet for every 90-degree turn, and it must end outside the house. Long runs with several turns collect lint much faster.

A long foil duct snaking up to a basement window collects lint faster than a short, straight metal run.

Frozen and snow-blocked hoods

January lows here average about 10°F, and the city gets around 31 inches of snow a year. Warm, wet exhaust freezes on the outside flap, and drifts bury low hoods on the side of the house. When the flap can’t open, the air backs up. After a snowfall, clear the hood before you run the dryer.

A frosted flap or a hood under a drift stops the airflow even when the vent itself is clean.

How often to clean your dryer vent

For most Cedar Rapids homes, once a year keeps drying times short and the fire risk low. Clean it every six months if:

  • the vent run is long or has several turns
  • you have a large family and run the dryer most days
  • you have pets that shed
  • you run a gas dryer in a small or closed laundry room

If you have just moved into a home and don’t know when the vent was last cleaned, book one now so you start from a known point. Our vent cleaning guide has more detail.

What dryer vent cleaning costs

A standard dryer vent cleaning in Cedar Rapids costs $80 to $150, depending on the length of the run and how packed it is. Long runs with several turns, roof vents and second-floor laundry rooms are quoted after we see the vent. You get the price before we start.

If a blocked vent has already blown the thermal fuse, we replace the fuse ($85 to $130) and clean the vent on the same visit, so the new fuse doesn’t blow again.

Can I clean the dryer vent myself?

You can clean the lint screen, the transition duct and the outside hood yourself, and that helps. Hardware store brush kits reach part of a straight run. For long runs, several turns or a vent through the roof, a rotary brush and a vacuum clear it properly without pushing lint into a clog further down.

Dryer vent cleaning: more questions

Questions we hear about vents around Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha.

Is a clogged dryer vent really a fire hazard?

Yes. Lint burns easily, and a blocked vent traps the heat that lights it. The U.S. Fire Administration lists failure to clean as the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires.

Is a foil or plastic duct behind the dryer OK?

Plastic and thin foil ducts crush easily, trap lint and aren’t allowed for the concealed part of the run. A rigid or semi-rigid metal duct behind the dryer is the better choice. We can swap a crushed duct on the same visit.

Why is there lint around my outside vent?

Some lint at the hood is normal. A lot of it, or a flap that stays half open, means the airflow is weak and lint is settling in the duct. It is a good sign that a cleaning is due.

Can a dirty vent make my dryer stop heating?

Yes, and it is the most common reason. Trapped heat trips the high-limit thermostat and eventually blows the thermal fuse. After that the dryer runs cold, or on some models won’t start at all. See dryer shuts off mid-cycle.

Do you clean vents that exit through the roof?

Yes, but we quote those after we see them, because access and length vary a lot. Roof vents are also more likely to have a screen or bird guard that clogs, which the code doesn’t allow on dryer vents.
