Whirlpool Dryer Check Vent Light and AF Code
The Check Vent light on a Whirlpool or Maytag dryer means the dryer measured restricted airflow. An AF code means the restriction is severe. The dryer isn’t broken: clean the lint screen, fix the duct and clear the vent, and the light turns off.

What the Check Vent light means
Many Whirlpool and Maytag dryers with electronic controls check the airflow early in each cycle. If the exhaust is restricted, a warning light comes on. Some models also show an AF code when airflow is badly restricted.

The light is a warning about the vent, not a fault in the dryer. It protects the thermal fuse and the heating parts from overheating.
How to turn off the Check Vent light
- Clean the lint screen and wash off any dryer sheet film.
- Pull the dryer out and straighten or replace a crushed transition duct.
- Check the outside hood opens fully. Clear snow and ice in winter.
- Clean the full vent run if airflow at the hood is still weak.
- Run a normal cycle. Once airflow is normal, the light stops coming on.
If the light stays on with a clean vent
If the vent is clean, the duct is straight and the hood opens but the light keeps coming on, look at the vent layout and the dryer’s sensing. Long basement runs, common in older Cedar Rapids homes, can restrict airflow even when clean. Under the 2024 building code the city uses, a standard dryer vent is limited to 35 feet, minus 5 feet for each 90-degree turn.
