Dryer Wet Inside or Leaking Water in Cedar Rapids

Water inside a dryer is usually condensation. Warm, wet exhaust cools in a vent that runs through a cold space, sags or is clogged, turns back into water and drains into the dryer. Why water collects inside a dryer
A load of wet clothes holds a lot of water, and all of it leaves the dryer as warm, damp air through the vent. When that air cools before it gets outside, the moisture turns back into water, runs down the duct and drips into the dryer. In Cedar Rapids this happens most in winter, when the vent passes through cold spaces.
A vent running through a cold space
Ducts that pass through an unheated garage, crawlspace, attic or a cold basement wall cool the exhaust fast. Water forms inside the duct and drains back toward the dryer.

Long runs and low spots let condensation pool. A sagging section of flexible duct can hold water and lint together, which also blocks airflow.

If the hood flap stays open or is missing, cold outside air flows back into the duct and the dryer between loads, and melting snow or rain can get in.

Clothes staying damp in the drum
If the dryer stops early, from a dirty sensor or a weak heat source, the leftover moisture condenses on the cool drum after the cycle.

The Cedar Rapids winter effect

How to stop the condensation
- Clean the vent so the air moves fast and leaves before it cools.
- Shorten and straighten the run where you can. Fewer turns and less length mean less time for the air to cool.
- Use rigid metal duct for the hidden part of the run, sloped slightly down toward the outside so water drains out, not back.
- Insulate the section that passes through cold space, like a garage or crawlspace.
- Fix or replace a stuck outside flap so cold air and snow melt can’t come back in.
- Don’t leave wet clothes in the drum after the cycle ends.
Is water in my dryer a safety problem?
It can be. Water in the vent traps lint and slows airflow, which makes the dryer overheat, and wet lint in a duct can grow mold. Water near the controls or motor can also damage parts. Stop the dryer and dry it out, then fix the vent.

Why is there water in my dryer when I’m not using it?
Usually melting snow or rain getting in through a stuck or broken outside flap, or water that froze in a low spot of the duct melting back. Check the outside hood first.
Why is my dryer drum wet after a cycle?
Moisture from the load condensed on the cool drum after the cycle, often because the dryer stopped early or the vent is slow. Clean the sensor strips and check the vent.
Is it condensation or a leak?
Dryers don’t have a water supply unless yours has a steam feature. If it has steam, a water inlet valve or hose can leak. Otherwise the water is coming from the vent.
Should my dryer vent slope a certain way?
