Annual dryer vent cleaning is the single most important thing Cedar Rapids homeowners can do to prevent dryer fires. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that failure to clean is the leading cause of residential dryer fires, responsible for 31 percent of all cases.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends cleaning the dryer lint trap after every load and having the full vent duct professionally cleaned at least once per year, more frequently if you have a large household or dry heavy loads.

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) publishes average appliance lifespan data. Dryers average 8 to 12 years of service life. If your dryer is under 8 years old and repair costs less than 50 percent of a new unit, repair is almost always the right economic choice.

How a Dryer Works, and Why That Decides the Repair
Every dryer, gas or electric, runs on three systems working together: airflow, heat, and drum rotation. When one fails, the symptom you notice is usually caused by a different system than you expect. That is why a dryer that takes three cycles to dry a load is almost never a heating fault.
- Airflow. A blower wheel pulls room air in, past the heater, through the clothes, out through the lint screen, and into the vent line to the outside of the house.
- Heat. An electric element or a gas burner warms that moving air to roughly 120 to 160 degrees. A cycling thermostat switches it on and off to hold that range.
- Rotation. A drive belt wraps the drum and loops over the motor pulley. Baffles inside the drum lift and drop the clothes so hot air reaches all of it.
A normal load takes about 60 minutes. If yours runs longer than that, start with airflow, not the heater. Restricted air means the heat cannot leave the drum, the high limit thermostat shuts the element off to protect the machine, then it cools and switches back on. The dryer keeps running and keeps tumbling, but it only heats part of the time, so the load never finishes.
The Vent Length Rule Most Homes Get Wrong
Vent length is measured in effective feet, not actual feet, and every bend counts against your total. Each 90 degree elbow subtracts 8 feet from what you are allowed. This is where most long dry times in older Cedar Rapids houses come from, because the dryer often sits on an interior wall and the duct has to turn two or three times to reach outside.

Work out your own effective length in two minutes
- Measure the straight run from the back of the dryer to the outside wall in feet.
- Count the 90 degree elbows. Multiply by 8.
- Add the two numbers together. That total is your effective length.
- Compare it against the table. A 14 foot run with three elbows is 38 effective feet, which is at the limit for rigid duct and well past it for semi-rigid.
If you are over the limit, no repair will fix the drying time. The duct has to be shortened, straightened, or converted to rigid metal. Why a Dryer Can Run Perfectly and Still Produce No Heat
An electric dryer needs 240 volts to heat, and it gets there through two separate 120 volt legs. The motor only needs one of them. The heating element needs both.
If one leg is lost, through a half-tripped double breaker or a failed element circuit, the drum still turns, the blower still runs, and the dryer sounds completely normal. It just never gets warm. This is the single most common reason people think their dryer is fine when it is not, and it is why checking the breaker panel is the first thing worth doing.
What to check before you call anyone
- Open the breaker panel and look at the dryer breaker. It is a double breaker. Switch it fully off, then fully on again, because one half can trip without visibly moving.
- Run the dryer on a timed cycle and put your hand near the exhaust outside. Moving air with no warmth points at the heat circuit. Weak air points at the vent.
- Check the lint screen and the vent hood outside. A flap that does not open means the line is blocked.
If the breaker is fine and the air is moving, the fault is inside the heat circuit: thermal fuse, thermal cutoff, high limit thermostat, cycling thermostat, or the element itself. How to Test a Dryer Part With a Multimeter
Every part in the heat circuit is a switch or a resistor, so each one can be tested the same way. Unplug the dryer first, or switch the breaker off on a hardwired unit. Set the meter to the lowest ohms setting and touch one probe to each terminal of the part with the wires disconnected.

A blown thermal fuse is a symptom, not a cause. It fails because the machine overheated, and it overheats because the air could not get out. If you replace the fuse and do nothing about the vent, the new one will blow too. That is the most common repeat repair we see.
What the Noise Is Telling You
Dryers fail loudly before they fail completely, so the sound is usually the most useful clue you have.
- Scraping or grinding that gets worse each week. The rear drum bearing or the front glides have worn through, and the drum is now rubbing the bulkhead. Stop using it. This is the one that damages other parts if you leave it.
- Rhythmic thumping. Flat spots on the drum support rollers. Replaced as a set.
- High squeal that fades once it warms up. Usually the idler pulley bearing.
- Motor humming with no movement at all. Seized motor or seized drum. Do not force the drum by hand.
- Normal running sound but the drum is still. Broken drive belt. See dryer not spinning.

Am I Being Overcharged for Dryer Repair?
This is the question we get asked most, so here is a direct answer. A fair Cedar Rapids dryer repair has three parts: a diagnostic fee, the part, and the labor to fit it. Most repairs land between $75 and $195 all in. Anything quoted over $300 for a single common part is worth a second opinion.

- The technician tells you which part failed and why, not just that the dryer needs a repair.
- You get the price before the work starts, not after.
- The diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.
- The vent gets checked on any no-heat call, because a blown fuse with a blocked vent will fail again.

Is a 10 year old dryer worth fixing?
Usually yes, and the reason is that the parts that fail on an old dryer are the cheap ones. A belt, a fuse, a thermostat, or a set of rollers costs a fraction of a new machine, and dryers are mechanically simple enough that age alone does not condemn them. Motors rarely fail.
The point where it stops making sense is when several systems have gone at once, or when the repair passes about half the price of a replacement. If the bearing, the rollers, and the belt have all worn out on a twelve year old machine, you are paying a large share of a new dryer to keep an old one. What about Samsung and LG?
They use the same three systems as every other dryer, so diagnosis is identical. The practical difference is that drum bearing wear tends to show up earlier on those models, often in the four to six year range, and the control boards are more sensitive to lint getting inside.
