The Maytag dryers we see most
Maytag has been part of Whirlpool since 2006, and today’s Maytag models share most of their inner parts with Whirlpool models. In Cedar Rapids laundry rooms we see a lot of these:
- Bravos and Bravos XL: large-capacity dryers sold from the late 2000s through the 2010s.
- Centennial: a simpler, dial-controlled line that is very easy to repair.
- Current Maytag models: models starting MED (electric) or MGD (gas), built on the Whirlpool platform.
Many families here replaced flooded appliances in 2008 and 2009, and dryers bought then are now 16 to 18 years old. Many are still worth fixing, because the parts that wear out are inexpensive.
Common Maytag problems
Drum won’t turn: the drive belt
The most common Maytag call we get. The large, high-capacity drums on Bravos and Centennial dryers put a lot of load on the belt, and after years of heavy loads it cracks and snaps. The motor keeps humming and the drum stays still.
What we test: the belt, the idler and the belt switch. See our broken belt guide.
Thumping or grinding: rollers and bearing
Big drums full of wet towels wear the support rollers faster. A thump each turn means flat rollers. A grind or rumble points to the rear bearing.
What we test: roller spin, drum play and the rear bearing.
Runs cold (electric): fuse, element or thermostat
Maytag electric dryers use the same heating parts as Whirlpool. A blown thermal fuse from a blocked vent is the usual cause, then the element or a thermostat.
What we test: the fuse, element resistance and each thermostat.
Runs cold (gas): igniter or valve coils
Gas Maytags light the burner with a glowing igniter and open the gas with two valve coils. No glow means the igniter. A glow with no flame means the coils.
What we test: the igniter, the flame sensor and the coils. See gas dryer repair.
Stops early: dirty moisture sensor
Many Maytags end Auto Dry cycles using two metal sensor strips inside the door. Dryer sheet film makes the strips read dry too soon. Wipe them with rubbing alcohol before calling.
What we test: the sensor strips and their wiring if cleaning doesn’t help.

Maytag codes and lights
| Code or light | What it usually means | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Check Vent light | Restricted airflow sensed during the cycle | Lint screen, the duct behind the dryer, the outside hood |
| AF | Airflow failure: badly restricted vent | Stop running it and clean the vent |
| PF | Power was interrupted during the cycle | Press start again. If it repeats, check the outlet and cord |
| F-codes | A control, sensor or motor fault, depending on the number | Note the exact code and call us |
Code meanings vary a little by model and year. We confirm each one against the service data for your model, then test the part before we replace it.
See our Check Vent light guide, which applies to Maytag too.
Does the Maytag reputation hold up?
Mostly, yes. Maytag motors rarely fail, and the dryers often run well past 10 years. But the belt, rollers, idler, thermal fuse and heating parts wear on a Maytag like on any dryer, and a blocked vent blows a Maytag’s fuse just as fast. Keep the vent clean and don’t overload the big drum, and the dryer lasts.
Why does my Maytag keep blowing thermal fuses?
Because it is overheating. The fuse only blows when the dryer runs too hot, and a restricted vent is the cause nearly every time. Long basement runs, crushed foil ducts and frozen outside hoods are common here. Clean the vent before or with the new fuse.

How a Maytag repair visit works
- Send us the model number. The tag is inside the door frame on most Maytags. It tells us the series and whether it is gas or electric.
- We test before we replace. A code or a symptom points to an area. The meter confirms the part.
- You approve the price. We show you the failed part and give you the full price.
- We run a full cycle. Heat, spin and airflow checked before we leave.
Dryer not working?
Tell us the series (Bravos, Centennial) or read us the model number. Calls before noon usually get a same-day visit.
Maytag dryer repair: more questions
Questions Maytag owners ask us around Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha.
Is Maytag made by Whirlpool?
Yes. Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006. Current Maytags are built on Whirlpool designs and share most of their parts, which keeps repairs affordable.
How long do Maytag dryers last?
Often 10 to 15 years with a clean vent and normal loads. The motor usually outlasts the belt, rollers and heating parts, which are the pieces we replace.
My Maytag Bravos dryer hums but won’t turn. What is it?
Almost always a snapped belt. Unplug the dryer and turn the drum by hand. If it spins freely, the belt is gone. If it won’t move, a roller or the bearing may be seized.
Why does my Maytag take two cycles to dry?
Usually a blocked vent or dirty moisture sensor strips. Wipe the strips inside the door with rubbing alcohol and check airflow at the outside hood. If both are fine, a thermostat or the heating part is weak.
Can you fix an old Maytag Centennial?
Yes. Centennials are simple dial-controlled dryers, and their parts are still easy to get. They are among the easiest dryers to keep running.
