Both machines, one visit

Dryers are most of what we do, but washers use the same kind of motors, switches, pumps and control boards, and we test them the same way, with a meter, one part at a time. When both machines need work, one technician on one visit means one trip and one afternoon at home instead of two.

Tell us about both machines when you call, with the brand and what each one is doing, and we’ll bring parts for both.

Washer problems we fix

Most washer failures come down to a handful of parts that wear out. These are the calls we get most.

Won’t spin or drain

The most common washer call. On top-loaders, a failed lid switch or lock makes the washer think the lid is open, so it won’t spin or drain. A clogged or failed drain pump is the other usual cause. Coins, socks and hair ties in the pump filter stop the water leaving.

What we test: the lid switch or door lock, the pump and the pump filter.

Won’t start or no power

A dead washer often has a failed lid switch or door lock, a tripped outlet (many laundry outlets are GFCI), or a control board fault. We check the cheap parts before the expensive one.

What we test: the outlet, the lock or switch, then the control board.

Leaking water

Leaks come from a torn door boot on front-loaders, a cracked fill hose, a loose drain hose or a failing pump seal. A $20 hose and a pump are very different repairs, so we find the source before we quote.

What we test: the hoses, the door boot, the pump and the tub seal.

Loud banging or grinding on spin

Banging is often an unbalanced load or worn suspension springs or dampers. A roar or grind that gets louder at high speed usually means worn tub bearings.

What we test: the suspension, the drive coupling and the tub bearings.

Before you call about a washer that won’t drain: turn it off, unplug it and check the pump filter if your washer has one (usually behind a small panel at the bottom front). Put down towels first, because water will come out. A lot of no-drain calls are a sock or coins in that filter.

Brands and types

  • Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and Amana: top-load and front-load washers and matching dryers. Many older pairs in Cedar Rapids are still running on these.
  • Samsung and LG: front-loaders, top-loaders and stacked units. We read their error codes on site.
  • GE and Frigidaire: washers and dryers, including stacked laundry centers.
  • Stacked and compact pairs: common in downtown apartments and condos, where 68% of homes in the 52401 ZIP code heat with electricity.

Newer front-load pairs are common in Marion, Hiawatha and the north side.

Newer homes in Marion, Hiawatha and Bowman Woods tend to have front-load pairs on pedestals. Older homes on the southeast and southwest sides more often have top-loaders in the basement, sometimes past 15 years old.

Pairs bought after the 2008 flood

The 2008 flood reached 5,390 houses in Cedar Rapids, and many families replaced their washer and dryer together in 2008 and 2009. Those pairs are now 16 to 18 years old, and when one fails, people often ask whether to fix it or replace both.

Our rule of thumb: if the repair is under half the price of a comparable new machine and the rest of the machine is sound, fix it. If a washer needs tub bearings or a dryer needs a motor at that age, replacing it is often the better buy, and we’ll say so. You don’t have to replace both just because they were bought together. Our repair or replace guide has the numbers.

Should I replace my washer and dryer together?

Only if both have real problems. A working dryer doesn’t need to go because the washer died. Matching looks nice, but most washers and dryers pair fine across brands. We’ll give you an honest read on each machine.

Washer and dryer repair: more questions

Questions we hear on laundry calls around Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha.

Can you fix my washer and dryer on the same visit?

Yes. Tell us about both when you call and we’ll bring parts for both. You pay for one trip and wait for one visit.

Why won’t my washer spin or drain?

On top-loaders, a failed lid switch or lock is the most common cause, because the washer thinks the lid is open. On front-loaders, a clogged pump filter or a failed drain pump is more likely. Both are quick to test.

My front-load washer smells musty. Can you fix that?

The smell usually comes from the door boot and the pump filter. Leave the door open between loads, wipe the boot and run a cleaning cycle. If the boot is torn or the drain is slow, those are repairs we can make.

Do you repair stacked washer and dryer units?

Yes. Stacked units take a little longer because the dryer has to come off the washer for some repairs. See stackable washer and dryer repair, and for rentals, our landlord page.

How long do washers and dryers usually last?

Most last about 10 to 13 years with normal family use. Heavy daily loads shorten that, and a clean dryer vent and a clean washer pump filter lengthen it. Age alone isn’t a reason to replace a machine that only needs a switch or a belt.
