What causes each noise
Thumping: worn drum rollers
The rollers carry the weight of the drum. Heat and weight flatten their rubber tires, and every flat spot thumps once per turn. The thump gets louder each week, and bad rollers put extra strain on the belt and motor.

Squealing: the idler pulley
The idler pulley keeps the belt tight. When its small bearing dries out it squeals, loudest at the start of a cycle. Left alone, it can seize and burn through the belt.

Grinding: the rear bearing or glides
A deep grind or rumble usually comes from the bearing at the back of the drum, or from front glides worn down to the plastic. This is the one noise you shouldn’t ignore, because a failing bearing adds friction and heat.
What we test: drum play front to back and side to side.
Rattling: something in the blower
Coins, hair clips and zipper pulls get past the lint screen and end up in the blower wheel. The rattle is sharp and changes with the drum speed. Caught early, it is a quick clean-out. Left alone, it can crack the blower wheel.

Humming: the motor or blower bearing
A new, loud hum can mean the motor bearings or the blower are wearing. If the dryer also struggles to start or shuts off mid-cycle, the motor is working too hard.

What to check before you call
- Empty the drum and run it. If the noise is gone, something in the load (shoes, a belt buckle) was the cause.
- Think about what went through the wash. Coins and hair clips from pockets often end up behind the lint screen or in the blower.
- Make sure the dryer is level. A dryer rocking on an uneven basement floor can bang against the wall or washer. Adjust the feet.
- Unplug it and turn the drum by hand. A thump you can feel, or a drum that grinds, confirms a roller or bearing problem.
If the noise comes with a burning smell, stop the dryer and unplug it. A seized bearing or a slipping belt can overheat, and lint near heat is a fire risk.
Why noise sounds worse in Cedar Rapids basements

Why replace all the rollers when only one is bad?
Rollers wear at the same rate. If one has a flat spot, the others are close behind, and a new roller next to worn ones still thumps. Replacing the set costs a little more in parts but saves a second visit.

Why is my dryer squeaking only at the start of the cycle?
A squeak that fades after a minute is usually the idler pulley or a dry roller. The bearing makes noise while it is cold and quiets as it warms up. It won’t fix itself, and it gets worse over time.
Can I spray lubricant on a noisy dryer?
We don’t recommend it. Spray lube attracts lint, and lint near a heat source is a fire risk. Rollers and idlers are sealed parts. When they are noisy, they are worn and need to be replaced.
My dryer thumps only with heavy loads. What is that?
Worn rollers show up most under weight, so towels and bedding make them thump. A load that is out of balance, like one wet comforter, can also thump. If it happens with normal loads, the rollers are the likely cause.
How long do dryer drum rollers last?
Often 8 to 12 years on a family dryer, less with heavy daily use or big loads. They wear gradually, so the thump starts faint and builds over months.
Will a noisy dryer stop working?
