What a dryer installation includes

We install new and replacement gas and electric dryers in homes across Cedar Rapids, Marion, Hiawatha and the nearby towns. The goal is a dryer that is safe on day one and vented properly, so it doesn’t start blowing fuses in its first year.

• Hookup to your power or gas: the right cord on an electric dryer, or a new flexible connector to your existing gas shutoff valve.
• A leak test on every gas connection before the dryer runs.
• A proper vent connection: a new transition duct from the dryer to your wall vent, and a check of the vent run and outside hood.
• Leveling so the drum runs quietly and the door closes right.
• Stacking kits and pedestals fitted when you have them.
• A test run with heat, airflow at the outside hood and a normal drum spin before we leave.

Electric dryer installation

An electric dryer runs on a 240-volt circuit with a 30-amp double breaker. The cord has to match your outlet, and the dryer’s terminal block has to be set up to match the cord.

Getting this wrong can leave the dryer with no heat, trip the breaker, or put voltage on the cabinet. We check the outlet voltage before connecting anything. About 30% of Cedar Rapids homes were built before 1960, according to Census data, so 3-prong outlets are common here. If the outlet or circuit itself needs work, that part goes to a licensed electrician.

Gas dryer installation

About 77% of Cedar Rapids homes heat with natural gas, according to Census data, so many laundry rooms already have a gas line for a dryer. We connect the new dryer to your existing shutoff valve with a new flexible connector, never the old one, and leak-test every joint before the dryer runs. A gas dryer also needs a normal 120-volt outlet for its motor and controls.

Venting it to code

Most early dryer problems come from the vent, not the new dryer. Cedar Rapids uses the 2024 International Residential Code, and section M1502 sets the rules for dryer exhaust.

• The duct is 4-inch smooth metal for the hidden part of the run, and it ends outside the house.
• A standard vent is limited to 35 feet, minus 5 feet for each 90-degree turn (and 2.5 feet for each 45-degree turn).
• The transition duct between the dryer and the wall is a listed dryer duct, kept short and uncrushed. Plastic and thin foil don’t belong here.
• The outside hood has a backdraft flap and no screen, because screens trap lint.
• Screws don’t poke into the duct, where they catch lint.

Stacked units and pedestals

Stacking a dryer on a front-load washer needs the stacking kit made for that brand and model, and the washer has to be level and solid first, or the stack shakes. Pedestals raise both machines and change where the duct sits, so the transition duct has to be set up to avoid kinking when the dryer is pushed back. See stackable washer and dryer repair.

How to get ready

• Measure the space and the path. Doorways, basement stairs and tight turns matter as much as the laundry spot.
• Check your outlet (electric dryers). Older homes usually have a 3-prong dryer outlet, newer or rewired homes a 4-prong. Buy the matching cord, because most new electric dryers come without one.
• Check for a gas shutoff valve (gas dryers). It is usually a yellow-handled valve behind the dryer spot. If there isn’t one, you need a licensed plumber first.
• Clear the laundry area and a path from the door.
• Know where the vent exits outside, so we can check the hood.

Replacing an old dryer?

Before you buy, it’s worth checking if the old dryer is worth a repair. A thermal fuse, belt or heating element costs a fraction of a new dryer. Our repair or replace guide walks through it.
