Dryer Takes Forever to Dry in Cedar Rapids

The short answer
A dryer that takes forever to dry almost always has an airflow problem: a lint-packed vent or a crushed duct behind the dryer. If the airflow is strong, a partly failed heating element, a drifting cycling thermostat or dirty moisture sensor strips are the next causes. A vent cleaning costs $80 to $150 in Cedar Rapids.

Why a dryer takes forever to dry
A dryer needs two things to dry clothes: heat, and a strong flow of air to carry the moisture out of the house. Slow drying almost always means one of them is weak. Airflow is the problem far more often than heat.
A lint-packed vent
The most common cause by a wide margin. Warm, wet air can’t get out, so it circles back through the drum. Clothes come out hot but damp, and every load takes two cycles.

A crushed duct behind the dryer
The flexible duct between the dryer and the wall gets flattened when the dryer is pushed back. It looks fine from the front and chokes the airflow completely.

A heating element with a broken coil
Some elements fail partly, so the dryer makes some heat but not enough. Loads come out warm and damp instead of hot and dry.
What we test: element resistance and the air temperature at the vent.
A cycling thermostat switching off early
If the thermostat that switches the heat on and off has drifted, the heat cuts out too soon each time and the dryer spends much of the cycle cold.

A weak gas flame
On gas dryers, valve coils that stick or a weak igniter can let the burner light late or drop out, so the dryer heats in short bursts.

Dirty moisture sensor strips
On Auto Dry, the dryer ends the cycle when two metal strips read the clothes as dry. Dryer sheet film fools them, so the dryer stops early and you run it again.

What to check before you call
Most of these take a few minutes and fix slow drying more often than you’d expect.
- Clean the lint screen, then wash it in warm soapy water. Dryer sheet film blocks air even when the screen looks clean.
- Go outside while the dryer runs. The flap should open and you should feel strong, warm air. Weak air means the vent is clogged.
- Pull the dryer out and look at the duct. Straighten any kinks. Replace crushed foil duct with semi-rigid metal.
- Check the washer’s spin. If clothes come out of the washer dripping, the washer isn’t spinning fully and the dryer is doing its job.
- Try Timed Dry for 40 minutes. If the load dries on a timed cycle but not on Auto, clean the sensor strips inside the drum with rubbing alcohol.
- Don’t overload it. A packed drum can’t tumble, and the air can’t reach the middle of the load.
Why slow drying is so common here
Cedar Rapids has plenty of basement laundries with long vent runs. About half the homes in the 52403 ZIP code on the southeast side were built before 1960, according to Census data, and many older houses send the vent across the basement to a small window or rim joist. Under the 2024 building code the city uses, a standard dryer vent is limited to 35 feet, minus 5 feet for each 90-degree turn. Long runs with several turns fill with lint much faster.
Winter makes it worse. January lows average about 10°F. Cold intake air takes longer to heat, and ice on the outside flap blocks the exhaust. If drying slowed down when the weather turned, check the outside hood first.
Can a dryer that takes forever be dangerous?
Yes, if the cause is a blocked vent. Trapped heat wears out safety parts, and lint near heat is the leading cause of home dryer fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. A slow dryer is often the first warning that the vent needs cleaning.

Why are my clothes hot but still damp?
Hot and damp means the dryer is making heat but the moisture can’t leave. That is airflow, almost always the vent or the duct behind the dryer.
Why are my clothes cool and damp after a full cycle?

How long should a normal load take to dry?
Most full loads dry in 40 to 60 minutes on a regular heat setting. Towels and bedding take longer. If normal loads regularly need more than an hour, something is restricting the dryer.
Will a new dryer fix slow drying?
Not if the vent is the problem. A new dryer on a clogged vent dries just as slowly. Clean the vent first.
